About Yolo County
Yolo County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850. The name derives from the Patwin Native American village of "Yoloy." The county seat is Woodland, though Davis — home of the University of California, Davis — is the county's most well-known city. UC Davis, established as a farm school in 1905 and elevated to a full university campus in 1959, has been the primary driver of population growth and economic development. The county grew from about 40,000 in 1950 to over 141,000 by 1990, with growth concentrated in Davis and the Sacramento-adjacent city of West Sacramento.
