About Ventura County

Ventura County was split from Santa Barbara County in 1872 and named after the San Buenaventura Mission. The county remained largely agricultural through the mid-20th century, known for its lemon and avocado orchards. Rapid suburbanization came in the 1960s through 1980s as families from Los Angeles County moved to communities like Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, and Oxnard. The population grew from about 115,000 in 1950 to over 670,000 by 1990.
