About Tulare County

Tulare County was created in 1852 from part of Mariposa County, named after Tulare Lake — once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, now drained for agriculture. The county sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley and became one of California's most productive agricultural regions, leading the nation in dairy, citrus, and cattle production. Its population grew from about 107,000 in 1940 to over 310,000 by 1990, driven almost entirely by the agricultural economy and related food processing industries.
