About Tehama County
Tehama County was created on April 9, 1856, from parts of Butte, Colusa, and Shasta counties. The name is believed to derive from a Wintun Native American word for "high water." Red Bluff, at the head of navigation on the Sacramento River, served as a critical landing point for miners heading to the Trinity County gold fields and later as a railroad terminus. The county's population grew from about 20,000 in 1950 to nearly 50,000 by 1990, driven by ranching, agriculture (olives, walnuts, almonds), and timber. Red Bluff is known for hosting the annual Red Bluff Round-Up, one of the largest rodeos in the western United States.
