About Sutter County
Sutter County is one of California's original 27 counties, created on February 18, 1850, and named after John Augustus Sutter, whose Hock Farm on the Feather River was the first major farm in the Central Valley. The fourth-smallest county by area in California, about 88% of its land is prime farmland. Yuba City became the permanent county seat in 1856. The county grew from about 26,000 in 1950 to over 64,000 by 1990, driven by agriculture — particularly peaches, walnuts, and rice — and its proximity to Sacramento.

Sutter County Specifics
Sutter County is a pioneer in digital vital records — it was the first county in California to offer electronic non-confidential marriage certificates and among the first to offer electronic birth and death certificates, allowing certified copies to be received within minutes. For mail-in requests, include a self-addressed stamped envelope and allow at least 5 working days. Debit and credit cards incur a $2.50 convenience fee.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Sutter County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
