About Stanislaus County
Stanislaus County was formed from Tuolumne County in 1854, named after the Stanislaus River (itself named after a Native American leader). Located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, the county became one of California's agricultural powerhouses, producing almonds, walnuts, milk, and poultry. Modesto, its county seat, grew as a railroad town. The county's population expanded from about 128,000 in 1950 to nearly 370,000 by 1990, driven by agriculture, food processing, and affordable housing.
