About Solano County

Solano County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850 and named after Chief Solano, a Suisun tribal leader who allied with the Mexican government. The county straddles the northeastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley. Travis Air Force Base, established in 1942, has been the county's largest employer and a major driver of population growth. The county grew from about 105,000 in 1950 to nearly 340,000 by 1990, fueled by the military presence and affordable housing attracting Bay Area commuters.
