About Sierra County

Sierra County was formed in 1852 from part of Yuba County. Named for the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it was a major Gold Rush destination — Downieville was one of the richest gold mining towns in California in the early 1850s. The county later lost territory when part of it was annexed by Plumas County.

Sierra County Specifics

Sierra County is California's second-least-populous county with fewer than 3,000 residents. Due to limited staffing, the office has shorter hours than most counties (9 AM - 4 PM) and closes for lunch. The mailing address uses the unusual format "P.O. Drawer D" rather than a standard P.O. Box number.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Sierra County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
