About Shasta County
Shasta County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850 and named after Mount Shasta. The county seat moved from the old mining town of Shasta to Redding in 1888, following the arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad. Shasta County sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley where it meets the Cascade Range, and the construction of Shasta Dam in the 1940s was a major economic driver. The county grew from about 44,000 in 1950 to over 147,000 by 1990, making it the urban center of California's rural far north.
