About San Joaquin County
San Joaquin County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850 and named after the San Joaquin River. Stockton served as a supply hub during the Gold Rush, and the county later became one of the most productive agricultural regions in the Central Valley. The port of Stockton, connected to San Francisco Bay by a deep-water channel, drove economic development. The county grew from about 135,000 in 1940 to nearly 480,000 by 1990, with growth accelerating in the 1980s as Bay Area commuters sought affordable housing.
