By Mail: Send a completed application with payment (check or money order) to: Sacramento County Clerk/Recorder, P.O. Box 839, Sacramento, CA 95812-0839. Allow 2-4 weeks for processing and delivery.

Sacramento County has records of births going back to 1850. The county has multiple in-person locations: downtown Sacramento at 600 8th Street, the South location at 8239 E. Stockton Blvd (Suite A), and the East location at 5229 Hazel Avenue (Suite B) in Fair Oaks. Allow 5-7 business days for mail orders. A returned check fee of $53 applies.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Sacramento County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
