About Plumas County

Plumas County was formed on April 1, 1854, from the eastern portion of Butte County. Named for the Spanish Rio de las Plumas (Feather River), it was a Gold Rush mining region. In 1864, the state legislature carved out a large portion of Plumas to organize Lassen County.

The county clerk has birth records from 1873 to present. Birth certificates can also be obtained through the Plumas County Public Health Agency at 270 County Hospital Road, Suite 206, Quincy.

Plumas County Specifics

Plumas County exclusively contracts with VitalChek for online vital records purchases and warns against using any other third-party website. The office closes briefly on Wednesdays for staff training. Birth certificates are available through both the Clerk-Recorder and the county Public Health Agency.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Plumas County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
