About Placer County
Placer County was formed in 1851 from portions of Sutter and Yuba counties, taking its name from the Spanish word for the gold-bearing sand and gravel deposits that drew miners during the Gold Rush. Auburn, the county seat, is one of the oldest towns in California. While the county was sparsely populated for most of the 20th century, explosive suburban growth began in the 1980s as Sacramento expanded eastward. Placer grew from about 57,000 in 1950 to over 172,000 by 1990, and has more than doubled since — reaching over 400,000 by 2020.

Placer County Specifics
Placer County's main office is in Rocklin (not Auburn, the county seat), at 3715 Atherton Road. A satellite office is also located at 2954 Richardson Drive in Auburn. Mail-in requests for authorized certified copies must include a notarized sworn statement. The county has birth records dating back to 1873 and marriage records from 1852.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Placer County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
