About Napa County

Napa County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850. Named from a Patwin Native American word, the county is world-famous for its wine industry — the first commercial winery was established by Charles Krug in 1861, and by 1890 Napa was California's leading wine-producing county. The 1976 "Judgment of Paris" tasting put Napa Valley on the global map. The county's population grew from about 46,000 in 1950 to nearly 111,000 by 1990, driven by wine tourism, agriculture, and the county's proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area.
