About Mono County
Mono County was created on April 24, 1861, from portions of Calaveras, Fresno, and Mariposa counties. Named after the Mono Paiute people who inhabited the Sierra Nevada near Mono Lake, the county experienced a mining boom in the 1860s-1880s centered around towns like Bodie and Aurora.

In Person: Visit the County Clerk-Recorder at 74 School Street, Annex I, Bridgeport, CA 93517. Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Most in-person requests are processed the same day or within a few business days.
By Mail: Send a completed application with payment (check or money order) to: Mono County Clerk-Recorder, P.O. Box 237, Bridgeport, CA 93517. Allow 2-4 weeks for processing and delivery.

Mono County Specifics
Mono County will not perform searches over the phone or via email, and will not fax or email birth certificates. Mail-in requests require a notarized sworn statement — applications without notarization will be rejected and returned unprocessed.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Mono County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
