About Mendocino County
Mendocino County was one of California's original 27 counties, created on February 18, 1850, though it lacked sufficient settler population for its own government until 1859 and was administered by Sonoma County in the interim. Named after Cape Mendocino (honoring a Viceroy of New Spain), the county is known for its dramatic Pacific coastline, towering redwood forests, and wine production. The county's population grew from about 40,000 in 1950 to over 80,000 by 1990, driven by timber, agriculture, fishing, and a growing tourism economy.
