Mariposa County Specifics
Mariposa County's original boundaries were so vast that many birth records from the 1850s-1860s attributed to "Mariposa" may actually correspond to locations now in other counties. The county seat's 1854 courthouse is the oldest continuously operating courthouse in California. John C. Fremont's Las Mariposas land grant makes early county records especially rich for Gold Rush-era genealogy.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Mariposa County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
