About Lassen County

Lassen County was formed on April 1, 1864, from parts of Plumas and Shasta counties. It was named for Peter Lassen, a Danish immigrant, trapper, and frontiersman who was one of General Fremont's guides. The county's creation followed the "Sagebrush War" of 1863, a jurisdictional conflict between California and Nevada over the Honey Lake Valley.

Lassen County Specifics

Due to border uncertainties in the 1850s and 1860s, the Honey Lake Valley area was claimed by both California and Nevada — it was part of the unofficial Nataqua Territory and Roop County, Nevada before a survey confirmed it was in California. Some early residents may appear in Nevada territorial records rather than California records.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Lassen County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
