About Lake County

Lake County was created on May 20, 1861, from Napa County. It was named for Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake wholly within California. The area was originally home to the Pomo people before European settlement. Some boundary territory was exchanged with Napa County as late as 1972.

By Mail: Send a completed application with payment (check or money order) to: 255 N Forbes St, Lakeport, CA 95453. Allow 2-4 weeks for processing and delivery.

Lake County Specifics

Lake County splits vital records duties between two offices: the Health Services Department handles births from the current and previous year, while the County Recorder at 255 N Forbes St handles all older records. Researchers should contact the Recorder for historical birth certificates. The office accepts cash or check only — no credit cards.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Lake County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
