About Kings County

Kings County was formed on March 22, 1893, from the western portion of Tulare County, with additional territory from Fresno County added in 1909. Named after the Kings River — called "El Rio de los Santos Reyes" (River of the Holy Kings) by a Spanish expedition in 1805 — the county sits in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Hanford, founded in 1877 as a Southern Pacific Railway stop, became the county seat. The county's population grew from about 50,000 in 1950 to over 101,000 by 1990, driven by agriculture and the presence of Naval Air Station Lemoore, established in 1961.
