About Inyo County

Inyo County was established on March 22, 1866, from the territory of the short-lived Coso County, which had been created in 1864 from parts of Mono and Tulare counties. The name "Inyo" is a Native American word meaning "dwelling place of the great spirit." The county contains both Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, and Badwater Basin in Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.

Inyo County Specifics

The Inyo County courthouse was destroyed by a major earthquake on March 26, 1872, and a fire in 1886 destroyed much of Independence, though county records were largely saved. Birth records only begin in 1905, coinciding with the statewide registration mandate. The office closes daily for lunch from noon to 1:00 PM.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Inyo County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
