About Imperial County
Imperial County is the youngest county in California, formed on August 7, 1907, from the eastern portion of San Diego County. Named after the Imperial Land Company that developed the area for agriculture, the county transformed desert into farmland through irrigation from the Colorado River via the All-American Canal. Despite extreme heat and low rainfall (about 3 inches per year), Imperial Valley became one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country. The county's population grew from about 63,000 in 1950 to over 109,000 by 1990, driven by agriculture and its position on the U.S.-Mexico border.
