About Humboldt County
Humboldt County was established on May 12, 1853, carved from Trinity County and named after the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt via Humboldt Bay. The county's early economy centered on timber — its redwood forests made Humboldt the top lumber-producing county in California for decades. Population grew steadily through the logging era, from about 69,000 in 1950 to over 119,000 by 1990. The presence of Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) in Arcata has also been a significant driver of population and births in the county since its founding in 1913.
