About Glenn County
Glenn County was created on March 11, 1891, from the northern portion of Colusa County. It was named for Dr. Hugh J. Glenn, the largest wheat farmer in the state during his lifetime and a prominent figure in California political and commercial life. Citizens in northern Colusa, unhappy with their share of tax revenue, successfully petitioned for the split.

Glenn County Specifics
Glenn County did not begin recording births until 1895, four years after its formation. All records for the Glenn County area prior to 1891 are maintained by Colusa County, so researchers must check both counties for a complete picture.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Glenn County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
