About Del Norte County

Del Norte County was created on March 2, 1857, from the former Klamath County. Its name is Spanish for "of the north," reflecting its position at California's far northwest corner along the Oregon border. Klamath County, from which it was carved, was itself dissolved entirely in 1874 — the only county in California history to be disestablished.

Del Norte County Specifics

The Del Norte County courthouse burned on January 18, 1948, and some early records were damaged or destroyed. Pre-1857 records may be found under Klamath County or Trinity County, the original parent county. The county's complex boundary history means territory also passed through Humboldt and Siskiyou counties at various points.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Del Norte County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
