About Colusa County
Colusa County (originally spelled "Colusi") was one of the original 27 California counties created on February 18, 1850, named for a Native American tribe living along the Sacramento River. It once encompassed a much larger territory, including all of present-day Glenn County and part of Tehama County. Glenn County was split off in 1891.

Because Glenn County was carved from Colusa in 1891, researchers looking for births in the Glenn County area before that date need to check Colusa County records. The Public Health Department only keeps records from the current and previous year — all older vital records must be requested from the Clerk-Recorder.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Colusa County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
