About Calaveras County
Calaveras County was one of the original 27 California counties created on February 18, 1850. Its name comes from the Spanish word for "skulls," after remains discovered along the Calaveras River by explorer Gabriel Moraga. The county lost its northern territory when Amador County was carved out in 1854.

Calaveras was the parent county for Amador (1854) and contributed territory to Alpine (1864), so researchers tracing Gold Rush-era families may find records split across all three counties. The county archives hold deeds, mining claims, and official records from the early 1850s.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Calaveras County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
