About Amador County

Amador County was created on May 11, 1854, from parts of Calaveras and El Dorado counties. It was named for Jose Maria Amador, a soldier, rancher, and miner who established a gold mining camp near present-day Amador City in 1848. In 1864, the county ceded its eastern Sierra territory when Alpine County was formed.

Amador County Specifics

The Amador County courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1862, and some early records were lost. Researchers looking for pre-1854 records should check Calaveras and El Dorado counties, since Amador was carved from both. The office accepts only cash, check, or money order — no credit cards.

Authorized vs. Informational Copies

Amador County issues two types of certified birth certificates:

Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
