About Alpine County
Alpine County was created on March 16, 1864, from parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Mono counties during a silver mining boom sparked by the nearby Comstock Lode discovery. The population peaked around 11,000 at founding but collapsed to about 1,200 by 1868 as mines proved unproductive. Silver Mountain served as the original county seat until Markleeville replaced it in 1875.

Alpine County Specifics
Alpine is the least populous county in California. With such a small population, very few births have ever been recorded here, so researchers should verify a record exists before ordering. Call ahead — the office closes daily for lunch from noon to 1:00 PM.
Authorized vs. Informational Copies
Alpine County issues two types of certified birth certificates:
— Authorized copy: Can be used to establish identity (for passports, driver's licenses, etc.). Only available to the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardians, or other authorized individuals.
— Informational copy: Marked "Informational, Not a Valid Document to Establish Identity." Available to anyone but cannot be used for identification purposes.
