About San Luis Obispo County

San Luis Obispo County is one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850 and named after the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded by Padre Junipero Serra in 1772. Located on the Central Coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the county developed as an agricultural and ranching region. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, founded in 1901 and elevated to a full university campus in 1959, has been the primary driver of the local economy. The county grew from about 51,000 in 1950 to over 217,000 by 1990, with growth concentrated in the cities of San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Atascadero.
